Zerg

When are we going to see a good Zerg preview? I saw some good Protoss and Terran footage but nothing really new for the Zerg except for the exploding zergling and the huge worm things.

The Zerg were my favorite race because they could just swarm any enemy. I didn't always win with them but I always had fun playing them.

As far as I can tell there are no hints yet as to when Blizzard will next update Starcraft2.com. We probably haven't seen much of Zerg yet other than the Worms, Zerglings, and Mutalisk because Blizzard is still designing them!

If I were to guess, I'd say that Terran would be the next race updated on their site, if we don't see more units and buildings for Protoss first.

It will most likely be around the same as the original Starcraft, I'd imagine, and then when the expansion comes out probably 2 years after, you'll see another 2-3 units per race as usual.

I can't wait to see the Zerg units either... I'm a Protoss player but Zerg just looks so cool from what we've seen so far... although the Mutalisks look a bit too "cartoony" for me..

We can already answer that question based on Developer Q&A over the last several days and previewed gameplay content. As of this moment, the Protoss at least 5 new units: Stalker, Warp Ray, Colossus, Mothership, and Phoenix. If the Immortal is considered a unit change, then 6 total so far.

Here is an excerpt from an interview last week with the game developer team:
Quote:
One of the most surprising revelations in the team's presentation was that StarCraft II will have the same number of units as the original game. That means that for every new unit added to a sides' army, one had to come out. Apparently the team did this for both gameplay and design reasons. Limiting the number of units forced the team to focus on exactly what each unit was expected to do and why it should be there. There were some iconic units like the Zealots, Marines and Zerglings that no one could imagine the game without, but there were other calls that were apparently quite painful to make. Pardo seems to feel that forcing the team to make these painful choices will result in a better game by avoiding extraneous units that never get used. Source: GameSpy
Since for every unit added, one has to be taken out, we will see the end of several units. Possibilities could include Archons, Dark Archon, Dark Templar, Reavers, Arbiters, and/or Corsairs.

Quote:
Blizzard stated they weren't yet willing to reveal as many new Zerg and Terran units; the focus of the announcement and brief gameplay demonstration was the Protoss. It certainly seems, especially considering the Protoss mothership's abilities, that the Zerg and Terrans will need some serious firepower to keep things even. Rob Pardo said in a smaller press briefing Zerg and Terran factions would not have a unit mechanic like the mothership, of which only one can be present on the battlefield at any time. This would seem to even further exacerbate the asymmetry between factions, meaning Blizzard certainly has a difficult job in front of them. Source: IGN
As we can see from this interview, it will likely be weeks to months before we see an update to the Zerg and/or Terran races. Blizzard may start revealing smaller units within several weeks. We can expect to see this process of revealing continue until StarcraftII is released. Blizzard did the same type of reveal with World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade.

Do we know that for each added unit, one must be removed? I read that interview too, I don't remember him saying any set number of units per race. Why couldn't we have a few more? Not that it needs it, I'm just curious.

As for the mothership... they took it out and downgraded it; no black hole, but cloaks... and planet cracker down to one laser from what i read, but you'll be able to build it like a normal unit. Either way, they're still pre-alpha so even a bunch of the protoss units could change, if not in appearance then in stats and that counts the most if you ask me...

Btw, I like the nydus worm... it reminds me of the Spice worms from Dune.

The zerg will without a doubt also get a super unit. But due to their nature, it may be 2 or 3 weaker, cheaper super units to follow zerg's "attack via masses" trend. So far I'm liking the stuff I see from zerg; like the Nydus Worm. I just hope massive swarms of 3D zerglings won't cause too much lag.
