Official: Won't be released this year and more..

The number one question pertaining to Starcraft 2 would have to be "When is it going to be released?" Well, according to Rob Pardo, Blizzard's vice president of game design, in an MSNBC interview yeseterday, the game won't be released this year.

The only thing I can give you [that’s] concrete is it’s not going to be this year. Some people were hoping, because of how advanced the game looks, that we’d have it out by Christmas, but that’s definitely not happening.

The interview also answers my physics question:

We’ve also added things like a physics system in the game…we’re not really utilizing it for gameplay as much as for graphical improvement. Like, you’ll see things like debris that will actually fall apart, which adds more immersion and a lot more realism.

Also, our A Fourth Race? question has finally been officially answered as well:

No fourth race. We talked a lot about it. We ultimately decided we wanted to focus on the three races we had.

The only real 'shocking' news here is that Starcraft2 will not be ready until 2008.

As discussed in the Physics Thread, Blizzard would most likely use the physics system for realism. Because they didn't deny it would play some influence in gameplay, we can only speculate how much if any will be involved.

A 4th race has been denied officially before and is once again. People will continue to question whether or not a 4th race will be added, but as time goes on we will probably see less and less discussion of it.

Well 2008 would make the most sense due to it being the 10 year anniversary..

I have no doubt that they will not release it even in 2010 or 2011, look at Starcraft: Ghost they announced that in what 2002? It is 2007 now, and still nothing! And the longer the wait, the more people that can get money for almost great computers to even the support to play the game... I would like it to be released at least in 2009 or 2008.

Starcraft Ghost is another story. It wasn't just pushed back because they were taking their time. It was because the company they had developing the game ended up quiting half-way through the job. While they still tried to have another company attempt to finish the game they ended up pretty much scrapping the project for now. Now I'm not totally positive but I think Blizzard is developming SC2 mostly internally just like their other games (SC Ghost wasn't a PC game).

SC is a huge franchise and as much as they push back release dates and take their time they would not piss their fans off by announcing it and then not actually releasing it for another 2yrs.

It wouldn't bother me when they release it. Blizzard has always had quality games and has been reliable, I will just sit back and enjoy the dead Zerg for now.

Now I can start saving my money... so I can replace my onboard VGA with a nice DX 10 ready VGA when SC2 is launched
