From Christie Golden's new book, StarCraft: Dark Templar #1: Firstborn (StarCraft: The Dark Templar Saga)

Does this suggest there may be a 4th possible race, a hybrid between zerg and protoss?

Blizzard has said a number of times there will be only the three original races. What are your thoughts?

If they wanted, they could easily add another race (remember the 'secret' mission at the end of BW which was supposed to be a preview of Starcraft 2?), but I think that'd be a major failure.

Three races is the perfect number; 2 is not enough and 4 is just way too many. For one thing, it would take far too long to balance all 4 races properly, but then you're also adding an entire new race which would need a separate campaign, etc.

Anyhow, I may be wrong but I believe it's confirmed that SC2 will definitely have only 3 races.

If there is a 4th race Blizzard should pull something big outta their ar5e to keep balance

You've probably heard the rumors of the Hungarian site?
Some site posted info about "star craft 2" a long long time ago, it said something about large walking protoss unit (maybe Colosus?) and a giant flying building of some sort (maybe protoss Mothership?). It also mentioned something about a 4th race, named Vanex, a hybrid between protoss and zerg... And few days ago some dude at some forum shared that some person, claiming to be an administrator of b.net, told him that there's a 4th race named... Vixen.

And as Modulus mentioned, the bonus BW mission planted it well... Who knows.

I really believe it SC2 had four races it'd be a great mistake. It's just overkill, and would convolute the storyline too much as well.

Maybe they might introduce a 4th race for a little bit in the campaigns, but only to play against as an enemy or something...

The addition of a 4th race would be interesting and a great surprise. Game developers have said on a number of occasions they will continue to have only the Protoss, Terran, and Zerg in Starcraft2. Not to mention game developers already have the difficult task of reevaluating many aspects of the game. A 'Vixen' race would be very difficult to balance with the other three races.

If it were to happen, this would be a great revision to the way we have been playing Starcraft for the last 10-years. It would diversify competition and create enough hype to bring even more players back to the game. Unfortunately Blizzard has repeatedly confirmed there will be no 4th race in Starcraft2.

They managed to balance Warcraft 3 pretty well with 4 races. However we are dealing with a Blizzard that has it's hands full working on World of Warcraft, which requires constant tweaking to keep people paying $15 a month.

My guess right now is that there will be still only 3 races in Starcraft 2.

Man it's been so long since I played War3, there were four races? lol... I guess Human, Orc, Night Elf, and Undead right?

I guess they could make four races, but I really do think it's overkill.

Blizzard would not have a problem implementing a 4th race into Starcraft2. World of Warcraft may be the most demanding to develop and update, but Blizzard has over 40 employees working only on Starcraft2. Obviously it would require more time and resources, but it could get done in timely fashion if they wanted it to.

eh you never know about the 4th race, blizzard said that warcraft was gonna stay with the same races, and when they released the other warcraft game there was two new races =/

I'm sure it's safe to assume that Blizzard has thought this out quite a bit. I'm sure they knew that many fans would be more than happy to see another race added but ONLY if it could be worked into the game to be balanced as perfectly as the origional three were. I'm guessing they gave it a try early in development but just wasn't meshing right maybe? I feel that if they were going to surprise us with a new race at some point they just would have avoided answering an questions pertaining to it and then out of nowhere announce the new race.

That's just my view on it. Though I guess it's always worth hoping.
